Gum or Periodontal Surgery

Your gums play a vital role in keeping your teeth healthy and beautiful. However, it receives less care than your teeth do. In fact, gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss among adults.

Symptoms

Pain isn’t present when the gum disease initially starts, that’s why patients don’t notice they have a problem until its in advanced stage. Some signs that may indicate gum problems are-

  • Reddish or swollen gums
  • Tender and bleeding
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Pain when chewing
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold food
  • Your teeth feel loose
  • Gums that seem to be pulling away
  • Teeth appearing to be longer due to receding gums

Periodontal Procedures

Whether treatment of gum disease is non-surgical or surgical depends on the stage of the disease, the state of the gum tissue and teeth, and your overall health.

Common periodontal procedure performed are-

Scaling and root planing: This is a deep-cleaning, non-surgical procedure. Hardened plaque and tartar (also called calculus) are scraped away (scaling) from above and below the gum line. Also, any rough spots on the tooth root are made smooth (planing).

Flap surgery/pocket reduction surgery: During this procedure, the gums are lifted back and tartar is removed. In some cases, irregular surfaces of the damaged bone are smoothed. The gums are then placed so that the tissue fits snugly around the tooth.

Gum graft: When the gums recede, it exposes the tooth root which could lead to numerous tooth and gum problems. A gum graft surgery is a process of covering the exposed tooth root using a soft tissue. The gum tissue is mostly taken from the roof of the mouth (palate) and stitched in place of gum loss.

Bone grafts: In this, area of bone loss around tooth is repaired with bone grafts, (fragments of your own bone or synthetic bone). Grafts replace bone – and help bone regrow – in areas destroyed by periodontal disease.

Dental crown lengthening: A gummy smile is a dental condition where the gums overlap the teeth making them appear smaller. To correct this, excess parts of the gum tissues are removed to expose more of the teeth.
